How many CE hours do New Mexico RNs need for license renewal?
New Mexico RNs must complete 30 contact hours of approved CE within the 24 months immediately preceding license expiration, per 16.12.2.10 NMAC. One contact hour equals 60 clock minutes. National certification or recertification by a recognized professional organization may substitute for the full 30-hour requirement. Does New Mexico require specific CE topics for RN renewal?
No. New Mexico does not require CE in specific topic categories for the general RN population. CE must enhance professional nursing practice and come from approved sources, but nurses have broad flexibility in choosing content. The Board's view is that CE is a lifelong professional responsibility and that nurses should choose CE appropriate to their practice.
What is CE Broker and is it required in New Mexico?
CE Broker is the New Mexico Board of Nursing's mandatory CE tracking platform for all nursing licensees, including RNs. All CE must be completed and uploaded to CE Broker before submitting a renewal application. CE Broker offers a free basic account and an optional paid professional subscription. Is New Mexico part of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)?
Yes. New Mexico is an NLC compact member. Eligible NM-licensed RNs hold a multistate license for practice in all compact member states. NM-resident nurses renew with NMBON under New Mexico's requirements. Nurses who change their primary state of residence to New Mexico from another compact state should contact NMBON to transfer their multistate license to New Mexico.
