Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, West Virginia Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

FAQ
How many CME hours do West Virginia physicians need?
MDs must certify at least 50 hours of CME every two years[1] via one of four pathways: (1) Classic CME (50 hrs total, 30 in specialty, up to 20 teaching), (2) ABMS board cert/recert during the period, (3) ABMS MOC participation, or (4) one full year of ACGME-approved postgraduate training.[2] Options 2-4 substitute for the 50-hour requirement but do NOT substitute for the 3-hour controlled substance requirement. DOs are licensed through the separate WV Board of Osteopathic Medicine with its own 32-hour rule.
Are there mandatory CME topics in West Virginia?
Yes, but they are conditional and universal in different ways. The universal mandate is nutrition: the continuing medical education must include completion of medical education in nutrition.[1] The statute does not specify an hour count. The conditional mandate is controlled substance training: physicians who prescribed, administered, or dispensed controlled substances during the two-year reporting period must complete 3 hours of Board-approved CME in Risk Assessment and Responsible Prescribing each renewal cycle.[2] Waiver available by attestation for non-prescribers.
Where can I check my West Virginia medical license renewal date?
The West Virginia Board of Medicine's online license search and renewal portal at wvbom.wv.gov is the definitive place to verify your expiration date and open renewals. MD licenses are valid for exactly two years.[1] DOs should use the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine site at wvbdosteo.org.
What happens if I miss the West Virginia CME deadline?
Failure to timely submit a certification of successful completion of a minimum of 50 hours of continuing medical or podiatric education shall result in the automatic expiration of any license.[1] Reinstatement within one year requires proof of CME completion plus renewal and reinstatement fees. Beyond one year requires applying for a new license.
Do residency and MOC hours count toward the West Virginia requirement?
Yes. Four pathways satisfy the 50-hour requirement: (1) Classic CME, (2) ABMS cert/recert, (3) MOC, (4) 1 year of ACGME training.[2] Options 2-4 substitute for the 50 hours but do NOT substitute for the 3-hour controlled substance course if the physician prescribed during the period.
Do West Virginia MDs and DOs have different CME requirements?
Yes. West Virginia licenses DOs through the West Virginia Board of Osteopathic Medicine (wvbdosteo.org) separately from the Board of Medicine that regulates MDs.[3] MDs must complete 50 hours per biennial cycle; DOs must complete 32 hours per biennial cycle, with at least 16 of those hours as AOA Category 1A or 1B credit. Both boards require the same 3-hour controlled substance CME for prescribers, but DOs must use a course pre-approved by WVBDO — a course approved by WVBOM may not qualify. See [DO board requirements](/cme-requirements/west-virginia/osteopathic) for the complete osteopathic requirements.

Never miss a West Virginia CME deadline.
