When does my Indiana RN license expire?
Indiana RN licenses expire on October 31 of each odd-numbered year, per IC § 25-23-1-16.1(a). The renewal cycle is biennial, meaning licenses are renewed every two years on that fixed October 31 date. Failure to renew by the expiration date automatically renders the license invalid without any formal board action — so timely renewal is essential. Renewal notices are distributed in advance of the expiration date to the licensee's last known address. RNs should keep their address current with the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency to ensure receipt of renewal notices.
Is Indiana in the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)?
Yes. Indiana is a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact, which allows eligible nurses who designate Indiana as their home state to obtain a multistate license valid for practice in all other compact member states. IC § 25-23-1-16.1(c) references the compact directly, noting a $25 supplemental fee for renewal of a multistate license. Because Indiana has no CE requirement for RN renewal, Indiana-domiciled nurses renewing their multistate license face no state-mandated CE obligation. Nurses who reside in another compact state and practice in Indiana are subject to their home state's CE rules, not Indiana's.
Are there any mandatory CE topics for Indiana RNs?
No. Indiana has no mandatory CE topics for RN license renewal because there is no CE requirement at all. The state imposes no requirements for cultural competency, opioid awareness, abuse reporting, domestic violence, or any other subject as a condition of RN licensure renewal. Note, however, that nurses who hold prescriptive authority as Advanced Practice Registered Nurses are subject to separate CE requirements tied to their prescriptive authority permit — those requirements are documented in the Indiana NP/APRN CE requirements file and are entirely separate from the RN licensure renewal process.
