FAQ
How many CE hours do Texas PAs need?
Texas PAs must complete 40 credits of CME every 24 months during their biennial registration period.[1] At least 20 hours must be formal Category I credit from AAPA-approved CME sponsors; up to 20 hours may be informal Category II (self-study, hospital lectures, grand rounds, case conferences).[1] Within the formal hours, PAs must complete 2 hours on opioid/pain management and an HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention course.
Are there mandatory CE topics for PAs in Texas?
Yes. At least 2 hours of formal Category I CME on pain management and opioid-related topics, and an HHSC-approved human trafficking prevention course before each renewal.[1] The human trafficking course cannot be carried forward from previous periods. The TMB PA page does not list a separate ethics requirement for PAs (unlike the physician page which requires 2 hours of ethics).
Where can I check my Texas PA license renewal date?
The Texas Medical Board provides a public license verification tool at profile.tmb.state.tx.us/Search.aspx. The renewal window opens 60–90 days before expiration; no grace period exists after expiration.[4] Penalties begin immediately upon expiration.
Is NCCPA certification the same as Texas PA license renewal CE?
No. CME is required every 2 years for the Texas PA Board and is calculated from expiration date to expiration date; it is also every 2 years for NCCPA, but may not be on the same schedule.[5] Maintaining NCCPA certification does not automatically satisfy the TMB CE obligation. PAs must independently track and satisfy both the NCCPA requirement (100 CME credits per 2-year cycle plus PANRE) and the Texas state requirement (40 hours per biennium with mandatory topics).
Can Texas PAs carry forward excess CE credits?
Yes, with limits. PAs may carry forward unused hours (maximum 80 total) for up to two years, applied by category type.[1] The human trafficking prevention course must be completed before each renewal period and cannot be carried forward.
