Mandatory topics

For PAs, 50 hours is the total CME requirement. Maryland also requires a set of one-time topics that count toward the 50-hour total.

Hrs vary
One-time
Maryland HB 783 / Chapter 478 (2025), effective for renewals on or after April 1, 2026. All health occupation licensees — including PAs — must complete both implicit bias training and structural racism training, once in a career, as a condition of license renewal. Hours are not specified in statute; duration depends on programs approved by the Maryland Department of Health Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities (MDH OMHHD). PAs who completed implicit bias training for a prior renewal are not required to repeat it; structural racism training is newly required at first renewal on/after 4/1/2026.

Conditional requirements

These rules apply only when the trigger described under each card is met (for example, holding a state-issued controlled substance registration or treating a specific patient population). Each cites the underlying statute or rule directly.

PAs with Maryland OCSA Controlled Dangerous Substances registration (initial registration or first renewal on or after October 1, 2018)

Except for researchers, have completed 2 continuing education credit hours [relating to the prescribing or dispensing of controlled substances that are accredited by the ACCME or recognized by the authorized provider's professional board].
Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Maryland Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Documentation & audit

Documentation of CE attendance must be retained for 6 years for possible audit by the Board of Physicians.[1] Documentation is not submitted at renewal unless the PA is selected for audit.

Waivers & exemptions

PAs renewing for the first time after initial licensure or reinstatement need only complete the 8 hours of pharmacology CE. They are exempt from the remaining 42 hours of Category 1 CE for that cycle.[1]

Proof of current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) may be used to satisfy the entire continuing education requirement in lieu of the 50-hour total.[1]

FAQ
How many CE hours do Maryland PAs need?
Maryland PAs must complete 50 hours of Category 1 continuing education during each two-year renewal cycle, with at least 8 of those hours in pharmacology topics.[1] All 50 hours must be Category 1, which is a stricter requirement than Maryland physicians face. PAs with current NCCPA certification (PA-C) may use that certification to satisfy the entire CE requirement in lieu of tracking the 50 hours.[1]
Are there mandatory CE topics for PAs in Maryland?
Yes. Maryland PAs must complete a minimum of 8 hours of Category 1 CE on pharmacology topics each biennial renewal cycle.[1] This is the only recurring topic mandate. PAs who prescribe controlled dangerous substances must also complete a one-time 2-hour CDS prescribing course.[3] Maryland also requires a one-time implicit bias and structural racism training for all health occupation licensees.[2]
Where can I check my Maryland PA license renewal date?
All Maryland PA licenses expire on June 30 of odd-numbered years.[4] You can verify your license status through the Maryland Board of Physicians licensee search at mbp.state.md.us. The Board sends renewal notices before the expiration date, but it is the PA's responsibility to renew on time regardless of whether a notice is received.
Can NCCPA certification substitute for Maryland PA CE requirements?
Yes. Maryland's PA CE rule permits proof of current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants to document compliance with the continuing education requirement.[1] This means PAs who maintain their PA-C credential through NCCPA do not need to separately track 50 hours of state-required CE, though they should still ensure their NCCPA certification is current at the time of Maryland license renewal.
Is the first Maryland PA renewal CE-free?
Partially. PAs renewing for the first time after initial licensure or reinstatement must still complete the 8 hours of Category 1 pharmacology CE before their license expires.[1] However, they are exempt from the remaining 42 hours of Category 1 CE for that first renewal cycle. This gives newly licensed PAs a reduced burden during their first two years of Maryland practice.
