FAQ
Montana used to require 24 CE hours — did that requirement return?
No. As of April 2026, Montana has not reinstated any CE requirement for RN renewal. The repeal of ARM 24.159.2102 is a permanent regulatory action. The Board continues to offer optional free CE modules, but these are not required. RNs should check the Montana Board of Nursing website at https://boards.bsd.dli.mt.gov/nursing for any regulatory updates.
Is Montana part of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)?
Yes. Montana joined the NLC in 2015. Montana-licensed RNs who are eligible hold a multistate license allowing practice in all compact member states. Because Montana has no CE requirement, Montana-resident compact nurses have no CE obligation at renewal. As of January 2, 2024, nurses who move from Montana to another compact state must apply for a multistate license in their new home state within 60 days.
Are there optional CE resources available to Montana RNs?
Yes. The Montana Board of Nursing offers free optional CE modules through its Teachable platform, including courses on the Role of the Board (1.5 hrs), Delegation (1.5 hrs), Complaint Filing Process (2.5 hrs), Nurse Licensure Compact (1.5 hrs), Licensing Process (2.0 hrs), Substance Use Disorder (2.0 hrs), Scope of Practice for LPNs/RNs (2.0 hrs), and Ethics (2.0 hrs). These are accredited by the Montana Nurses Association (ANCC-approved provider) and are freely available but not required for renewal.
Where can I verify my Montana RN license status and renewal date?
Montana RNs can verify their license status through the public license lookup portal at https://ebizws.mt.gov/PUBLICPORTAL. Online renewal is available at ebiz.mt.gov/pol. General licensing questions can be directed to the Montana Department of Labor & Industry Board of Nursing at (406) 444-6880 or DLIBSDHELP@MT.GOV.
