Documentation & audit

CE records retention: at least 3 years. Patient records retention remains at least 5 years under S.C. Code 40-15-83.

Waivers & exemptions

First-renewal exemption: upon initial licensure in South Carolina, newly licensed dentists, dental hygienists, and dental/orthodontic technicians are exempt from continuing education requirements for the first re-licensure period.

Retirement waiver — fully retired licensees may request a waiver of CE and CPR requirements. If approved, the licensee must sign an Agreement that they will not resume practice without first fulfilling all owed CE and other requirements during the retirement period. Waiver does NOT exempt the annual license renewal fee or other annual requirements.

The Board may issue a CE and/or CPR exemption or extension on request for disability, extraordinary circumstances, or hardship. The exemption or extension is not automatic and must be requested before renewing.

Active duty members of the United States military are exempt from CE requirements, but must submit military orders to the Board at renewal.

Licensees serving a residency through a CODA-approved program are exempt from CE requirements, but must submit proof of residency in CE Broker before renewal.

FAQ
Does South Carolina treat DDS and DMD differently for CE purposes?
No. DDS and DMD are equivalent dental degrees, and the South Carolina State Board of Dentistry applies identical CE rules to both.
Are ADA CERP credits accepted in South Carolina?
Yes. ADA CERP-recognized and AGD PACE-approved providers are accepted automatically because the American Dental Association and Academy of General Dentistry are pre-approved sponsoring organizations under Reg. 39-5.
Are there mandatory CE topics for dentist renewal in South Carolina?
Yes. The Board's May 23, 2025 Dental CE Requirements PDF requires one hour in sterilization and infection control for dentists. Dentists licensed to prescribe controlled substances must complete two hours in prescribing and monitoring controlled substances, and dentists holding a sedation permit must complete four hours in pharmacology, anesthesia, emergency medicine, or sedation. CPR recertification every two years and radiation safety training certification for staff who place or expose radiographs remain separate operational requirements.
Where can I check my South Carolina dental license renewal date?
The South Carolina LLR maintains license records at llr.sc.gov/bod. Renewal aligns with the biennial March 2 – March 1 odd-year cycle. CE compliance is tracked through CE Broker.
