For Dentists, 28 hours is the total CME requirement. South Carolina also requires a set of one-time topics that count toward the 28-hour total.
“One hour must be in sterilization and infection control.”
“CPR recertification must be live, in-person. You may not take the practical portion of the course online, even if it is live and interactive.”
“Every dentist shall certify to the Board that any person employed, who shall place and expose radiographic films, has successfully completed the training required herein.”
These rules apply only when the trigger described under each card is met (for example, holding a state-issued controlled substance registration or treating a specific patient population). Each cites the underlying statute or rule directly.
Dentists licensed to prescribe controlled substances under Section 40-15-145
“If licensed to prescribed controlled substances, as is required in Section 40-15-145, two hours must be in prescribing and monitoring controlled substances.”
Dentists holding a sedation permit under Section 40-15-420
“If holding a sedation permit, as is required in Section 40-15-420, four hours must be in pharmacology, anesthesia, emergency medicine, or sedation”
Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, South Carolina Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.
