FAQ
What counts as qualifying CE for Virginia RN renewal?
For CE-based renewal options (options 8 and 9), activities must come from recognized sources including the American Nurses Association, NCSBN, regionally accredited universities, hospitals, healthcare facilities, the American Heart Association, and state nursing boards, per 18VAC90-19-160. ANCC-accredited CE generally qualifies under this standard. CE must be relevant to the practice of nursing, which is a broad requirement that encompasses most nursing-specific content.
Is Virginia in the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC)?
Yes. Virginia is an NLC compact member, and eligible Virginia RNs hold a multistate license authorizing nursing practice in all NLC member states. CE and renewal obligations are governed by the nurse's home state. Virginia nurses residing in Virginia renew with VABON under Virginia's nine-option continued competency requirement. License verification and renewal are available through the DHP's online portal at https://www.dhp.virginia.gov.
Are there mandatory CE topics for Virginia RN renewal?
No. Virginia's 18VAC90-19-160 does not impose universal mandatory CE topic requirements for the general RN population. There are no state mandates for pharmacology, abuse reporting, domestic violence, opioid awareness, or cultural competency CE for standard RN renewal. Virginia nurses selecting a CE-based pathway have full flexibility in choosing content relevant to their nursing practice area.
Where can I check my Virginia RN license renewal date?
Virginia nurses can verify their license status and renewal date through the Virginia Department of Health Professions online portal at https://www.dhp.virginia.gov. The Virginia Board of Nursing's main page at https://www.dhp.virginia.gov/Boards/Nursing/ provides access to continued competency resources, board contact information, and renewal guidance. Nurses may also contact VABON directly to confirm their specific renewal date.
