Virginia has no state-mandated topic requirements beyond the 30-hour total.
Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Virginia Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.
A practitioner shall be exempt from the continuing competency requirements for the first biennial renewal following the date of initial licensure in Virginia.
Hardship extensions of up to one year may be granted for documented hardship.
Exemptions apply for uncontrollable circumstances (disability, military service, declared disasters).
Practitioners practicing without compensation under physician supervision or as medical examiners may qualify for exemptions.
