Conditional requirements

These rules apply only when the trigger described under each card is met (for example, holding a state-issued controlled substance registration or treating a specific patient population). Each cites the underlying statute or rule directly.

A health professional who is authorized under this title to prescribe schedule II controlled substances and who has a valid United States drug enforcement administration registration number or who is authorized under chapter 18 of this title to dispense controlled substances shall complete a minimum of three hours of opioid-related, substance use disorder-related or addiction-related continuing education each license renewal cycle.
Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Arizona Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Documentation & audit

Renewal is tied to the PA's birthday.[2] PAs must renew every other year on or before their birthday. A late renewal penalty applies after 30 days; the license automatically expires 90 days after the birthday and the PA must reapply for licensure from scratch.

Waivers & exemptions

Under ARS 32-2523(F), the CE requirement 'is deemed satisfied if, at the time of renewal, the licensee holds a certification in good standing from a certifying body approved by the board.'[2] In practice PAs with current NCCPA certification are deemed to have satisfied the 40-hour requirement; ARS 32-2523(A) also limits the random audit (10% of renewing PAs per calendar year) to those who do NOT hold such certification.

Under ARS 32-2523(E), the board may grant deadline extensions for illness, religious missionary activity, residence in a foreign country, or other extenuating circumstances upon written request.[2]

FAQ
How many CE hours do Arizona PAs need?
Arizona physician assistants must complete 40 hours of Category I continuing medical education every two years.[2] The renewal cycle is tied to the PA's birthday, not a calendar year or license issuance date. PAs must renew every other year on or before their birthday. The statute accepts credit from AAPA, AMA, AOA, and any other accrediting organization acceptable to the board. PAs who maintain current NCCPA certification are deemed to have satisfied the 40-hour requirement.[2]
Are there mandatory CE topics for PAs in Arizona?
PAs who are authorized to prescribe Schedule II controlled substances and hold a valid DEA registration must complete 3 hours of opioid-related, substance use disorder-related, or addiction-related continuing education per renewal cycle.[1][3] This requirement comes from Arizona's 2018 Opioid Epidemic Act and the 3 hours count toward the 40-hour total. PAs without a DEA registration or who do not prescribe controlled substances are exempt from this mandate.
Where can I check my Arizona PA license renewal date?
Arizona PA license renewal is managed through the Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants at azpa.gov, which is a separate board from the Arizona Medical Board that regulates physicians.[4] Renewal is due every other year on or before the PA's birthday.[2] If the license is not renewed within 30 days after the birthday, a late fee applies. If it is not renewed within 90 days, the license automatically expires and the PA must reapply for licensure from scratch.
