Arizona CRNAs renew their APRN certificate by providing evidence of current national certification or recertification (NBCRNA for CRNAs) under A.A.C. R4-19-506(B). CRNAs who have not maintained at least 960 practice hours in the prior five years (and who therefore cannot rely on the practice-hours pathway in R4-19-506(A)) must complete coursework or continuing education activities at the graduate or advanced practice level totaling at minimum 45 contact hours of advanced pharmacology and 45 contact hours in a subject related to the role and population focus of certification, plus precepted clinical practice hours on a graduated schedule.

Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Arizona Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Credit systemNotes
NBCRNA Class A
Active NBCRNA certification (which requires 60 Class A / MAC Ed credits per cycle) is recognized by the AZBN as evidence of continuing competency for CRNAs.
AANA_APPROVED
AANA-approved CE qualifies.
Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

No formal waivers or exemptions are published for Arizona.

FAQ
How many state-level CE hours do Arizona CRNAs need?
Arizona does not require a fixed number of CE hours from CRNAs at the state level. CRNAs satisfy state continuing competency by maintaining active NBCRNA certification. Only CRNAs whose national certification has lapsed must demonstrate competency through state-specified CE.
Does Arizona require NBCRNA certification for CRNA licensure?
Yes. NBCRNA initial certification is required for Arizona RNA certification, and active NBCRNA certification must be maintained on the four-year MAC cycle for the RNA credential to remain effective.
Is Arizona part of the APRN Compact?
No. Arizona has not enacted the APRN Compact as of 2026 (only DE, ND, SD, and UT have enacted, and the compact has not yet activated nationally). Arizona is, however, a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for the underlying RN portion. CRNA authorization in Arizona remains single-state.
Where can I check my Arizona CRNA license renewal date?
License status, renewal dates, and verification are available through the AZBN License Verification tool at azbn.gov/licenses/license-verification. CRNAs should also monitor their NBCRNA portal for the four-year MAC recertification timeline.
