FAQ
Is Arizona a Nurse Licensure Compact state?
Yes. Arizona is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). Arizona-licensed nurses hold a multistate license that allows practice in other compact states without obtaining a separate license in each state.
How does Arizona RN license renewal work without CE?
Arizona RNs renew their license every four years (quadrennial cycle) through the AZBN online portal at azbn.gov. Renewal requires documenting that at least one of the practice-hours competency pathways has been met (960+ practice hours, new degree, or approved refresher course) and paying the $160 renewal fee. There is no CE attestation or CE documentation submission required — competency is demonstrated through practice hours, not continuing education.
What if I haven't practiced nursing in Arizona for several years?
Nurses who cannot document 960 hours of active nursing practice in the past five years and do not qualify under any of the other competency pathways (recent degree, approved refresher course, or advanced nursing degree) must complete an AZBN-approved refresher course before renewal. A list of approved refresher programs is available on the AZBN website. AZBN issues a temporary license for the refresher course period so nurses can complete the requirement and then renew their license.
