Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

Maintenance of national certification or recertification by a board-recognized national certifying body satisfies the 30-hour CE requirement.

Completion of an accredited academic program of study in nursing or a related field, as recognized by the board, satisfies the continuing competency requirement.

Verification of competency by a licensed health care facility or physician's office (part of a health system), combined with at least 500 hours of nursing practice, satisfies the requirement.

Other board-approved activities demonstrating competency in the nursing field may satisfy the requirement at board discretion.

FAQ
What are the alternatives to the 30-hour CE requirement in Georgia?
Georgia recognizes four alternative pathways to the 30-hour CE option. A nurse may satisfy the biennial continuing competency requirement by: (2) maintaining or earning current national certification from a board-recognized certifying body; (3) completing an accredited academic program in nursing or a related field recognized by the Board; (4) receiving employer competency verification from a licensed health care facility or health system physician's office combined with documentation of at least 500 nursing practice hours; or (5) completing other board-approved activities demonstrating competency. These pathways are equal alternatives — only one needs to be satisfied per renewal cycle.
Are there mandatory CE topics for Georgia RN renewal?
No. Georgia does not impose mandatory CE on specific clinical topics as a universal RN renewal requirement. The statute requires total competency hours or equivalent demonstrations, not prescribed topic content. Nurses choose CE subjects that align with their practice area and professional interests within the board-approved provider framework.
Is Georgia in the NLC nursing compact?
Yes. Georgia is a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC). Eligible Georgia-licensed RNs hold a multistate license allowing practice in all NLC member states. CE and renewal requirements are determined by the nurse's home state — the state of primary residence. Georgia RNs residing in Georgia must satisfy the Georgia Board of Nursing's biennial competency requirements and track CE through CE Broker.
Where can I track CE hours and check my Georgia RN license renewal date?
Georgia requires CE hours to be tracked and reported through CE Broker at www.cebroker.com. Nurses can verify their license status using the Georgia Secretary of State's license verification tool at https://verify.sos.ga.gov/verification/. For renewal and CE questions, the Georgia Board of Nursing can be reached at (404) 424-9966 or (844) 753-7825.
