FAQ
Does New York require pharmacology CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
New York requires NPs who hold a DEA registration to complete 3 hours of coursework in pain management, palliative care, and addiction every three years under N.Y. Pub. Health Law § 3309-a. Initial completion was required by July 1, 2017, and it recurs every three years thereafter. This is not a general pharmacology CE mandate — it is specifically tied to DEA registration and covers pain management, palliative care, and addiction topics. The training is administered by the NYS Department of Health Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement, not the NYSED OP. Attestation forms and approved provider information are available at www.health.ny.gov/professionals/narcotic/mandatory_prescriber_education/.
Is New York in the APRN Compact?
No. New York is not a member of either the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) or the APRN Compact. All nurses practicing in New York, including NPs, must hold a valid, separately issued New York nursing license through the NYSED Office of the Professions. Out-of-state compact licenses do not authorize practice in New York. NPs who practice in multiple states, including New York, must maintain a New York NP license independently and comply with all New York CE and mandatory training requirements.
Does New York require NPs to maintain national certification for licensure renewal?
Yes. New York requires NPs to maintain national certification as a condition of licensure. The NYSED Office of the Professions recognizes national certifying bodies for NP specialty areas, and documentation of current national certification from a recognized certifying body must be maintained. NPs certified after their initial licensure must ensure their certification remains current; allowing national certification to lapse may affect the NP's ability to renew their New York licensure.
Where can I check my New York NP license renewal date?
New York NPs can verify their license status and registration period through the NYSED Office of the Professions online license verification and renewal portal at https://www.op.nysed.gov/professions/nurse-practitioners/. The OP also accepts inquiries by phone at (518) 474-3817 ext. 410. For prescriber education questions and attestation forms, NPs should contact the NYS DOH Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement directly at narcotic@health.ny.gov or visit www.health.ny.gov/professionals/narcotic/mandatory_prescriber_education/.
