FAQ
Does North Dakota require pharmacology CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
Yes. N.D. Admin. Code 54-05-03.1-11(5) requires NPs with prescriptive authority to complete 15 contact hours of education in pharmacotherapy related to their scope of practice within the two-year period preceding renewal. Certificates must itemize pharmacology content — generic CE certificates that do not specify pharmacology topics do not qualify. UpToDate activities are specifically excluded. Academic credits, approved seminars, and correspondence/home study programs are all accepted forms, provided they are pharmacotherapy-specific.
Is North Dakota in the APRN Compact?
No. North Dakota is an NLC compact member for RN licensure but is not a member of the APRN Compact as of 2026. NPs practicing in North Dakota must hold a North Dakota APRN license. The NLC compact status applies only to the underlying RN license layer. NPs from other states who wish to practice as APRNs in North Dakota must obtain North Dakota APRN authorization separately.
Does North Dakota require NPs to maintain national certification for APRN renewal?
Yes. Under N.D. Admin. Code 54-05-03.1-06, renewal of APRN licensure requires submission of evidence of current national certification in the appropriate APRN role and population focus, or participation in a NDBON-recognized competence maintenance program. National certification is a required component of APRN renewal in addition to any CE requirement. NPs should track their national certification expiration separately from their North Dakota license renewal date.
Where can I check my North Dakota NP/APRN license renewal date?
North Dakota NPs can verify their license status and manage renewals through the NDBON Nurse Portal at www.ndbon.org. The NDBON website at ndbon.org/licensing/aprn/ provides APRN-specific renewal guidance and FAQs. For CE and pharmacotherapy CE questions, the NDBON CE page at ndbon.org/licensing/renewal/ce/ and the APRN FAQ page at ndbon.org/licensing/aprn/aprn-faqs/ are the primary sources. Contact NDBON at renewal@ndbon.org or (701) 751-3000.
