Mandatory topics

For NPs, 45 hours is the total CME requirement. Oregon also requires a set of one-time topics that count toward the 45-hour total.

Biennial
At least 15 of the 45 CE hours must be in pharmacotherapeutic content at the NP level, congruent with the NP's specialty role. This applies to NPs using the 45-hour CE pathway. Part of the 45-hour total, not additive. Per OAR 851-050-0138.

Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Oregon Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

FAQ
Does Oregon require pharmacology CE for NPs?
Yes. NPs using the 45-hour CE pathway must include at least 15 hours of pharmacotherapeutic CE at the NP level congruent with their specialty role per OAR 851-050-0138. This is part of the 45-hour total, not additive. The pharmacotherapy CE must be at the advanced practice level and relevant to the NP's specialty — general pharmacology CE at the RN level does not satisfy this sub-requirement. NPs who satisfy renewal through national certification maintenance use their certifying body's CE requirements rather than the 45-hour OSBN framework.
Is Oregon in the APRN Compact?
No. Oregon is not a member of either the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) or the APRN Compact as of 2026. Every nurse practicing in Oregon, including NPs, must hold a separate Oregon license. There is no compact mechanism that grants practice rights in Oregon based on licensure in another state. NPs from other states who wish to practice in Oregon must apply for and maintain an Oregon NP license through the OSBN.
Does Oregon require NPs to maintain national certification for renewal?
For NPs initially licensed after January 1, 2011, yes — verification of current national Board certification congruent with license type and population focus is a mandatory component of renewal per OAR 851-031-0048(2)(f). For this cohort, practicing on an expired national certification is prohibited regardless of state licensure status. For NPs initially licensed before January 1, 2011, national certification is an optional pathway (alternative to 45 CE hours) rather than a mandatory renewal requirement.
Where can I check my Oregon NP license renewal date?
Oregon NPs can verify their license status and submit renewals through the OSBN renewal portal at osbn.boardsofnursing.org/orbn. The OSBN competency requirements page at www.oregon.gov/osbn/pages/competency-requirements.aspx provides current guidance. Licenses expire two years from issuance, and renewal applications must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the expiration date. For questions about NP renewal requirements, contact the OSBN through the main website at https://www.oregon.gov/osbn.
