Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Wyoming Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

Newly licensed physicians — those who hold Wyoming licenses for less than three years — are exempt from the 60-hour total for their first three-year cycle.[2]

Physicians who obtained ABMS board certification or recertification within the preceding three years are exempt from the 60-hour requirement for that cycle.[2]

Physicians enrolled in ACGME- or RCPSC-accredited residency or fellowship programs are exempt.[2]

Physicians who hold inactive Wyoming licenses are exempt from the CME requirement.[2]

The board may grant exemptions for circumstances beyond the control of the licensee, such as temporary disability, mandatory military service, or officially declared disasters.[2]

Extensions of up to one year may be granted upon written request showing good cause.[2]

FAQ
How many CME hours do Wyoming physicians need?
Wyoming physicians must complete not less than 60 hours of CME in the three years preceding each license renewal.[2] The requirement applies equally to MDs and DOs under the unified Wyoming Board of Medicine. Hours may be earned in any combination of AMA-approved Category I or Category II credit, AOA-approved credit, physician recognition awards, specialty board certificates, self-assessment activities, volunteer clinical service, or volunteer board consultant service. Wyoming does NOT require a minimum number of Category 1 hours — one of the most flexible state rules.
Are there mandatory CME topics in Wyoming?
For the 60-hour triennial total, Wyoming does not require specific topics. The only topic-specific rule is for prescribers: physicians who hold a Wyoming controlled substance registration must complete at least 1 hour of CME every 2 years on responsible prescribing or substance use disorder treatment.[1] This applies only to physicians registered with the Wyoming Board of Pharmacy to dispense a controlled substance. The 1-hour biennial requirement is separate from the 60-hour triennial total and applies only to CS-registered prescribers.
Where can I check my Wyoming medical license renewal date?
Wyoming medical license renewals are processed through the Wyoming Board of Medicine. Look up your license and confirm your renewal date through wyomedboard.wyo.gov.[3] Wyoming physician licenses are issued on a three-year cycle tied to each physician's individual renewal date.
Do ABMS board certification activities count toward Wyoming CME?
Yes, and more significantly they can fully exempt. Physicians who obtained ABMS certification within three years are exempt from the 60-hour requirement for that cycle.[2] Specialty board certificates also count as part of the accepted combination even when the physician is not exempt.[2] Wyoming is one of the more generous states on ABMS recognition.
What records do Wyoming physicians need to keep for CME?
Records must be maintained for no less than four years and provided upon board request.[2] The board audits approximately 10% of its active licensees annually, with audited practitioners given 45 days to provide documentation.[2] Physicians must sign affidavits with renewal applications verifying CME completion or exemption status.[2]
Do Wyoming MDs and DOs have different CME requirements?
No. Wyoming does not maintain a separate osteopathic licensing board — DOs and MDs are both licensed by the Wyoming Board of Medicine and subject to the same CME requirements (60 hours per renewal cycle).
