Connecticut requires 2 contact hours covering (1) screening for conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, risk of suicide, depression and grief, and (2) suicide prevention training. This requirement took effect January 1, 2022, for RNs and LPNs actively practicing in Connecticut. First-time renewal applicants are exempt. One contact hour is defined as at least 50 minutes of instruction.

Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Connecticut Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Documentation & audit

Documentation of CE must be retained for a minimum of 3 years following the year in which the CE was completed. Licensees must produce records within 45 days of a departmental audit request.

Waivers & exemptions

First-time renewal applicants are exempt from the 2-hour mental health/suicide prevention CE requirement.

Nurses not engaged in active practice may apply for exemption from the CE requirement.

Medical disability or illness may qualify a licensee for waivers or time extensions.
