Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

Licensees are excused from general CE during the biennium in which they receive initial licensure, but Rule 64B5-12.0135(4) says this does not relieve statutory training obligations for medical errors, domestic violence when due, HIV/AIDS, or controlled-substance prescribing.

Dentists enrolled full-time in a post-graduate specialty training or residency program at a CODA-accredited dental school are excused from general CE for that biennium, subject to the statutory-topic carve-out in Rule 64B5-12.0135(4).

Dentists serving as full-time faculty at a CODA-accredited dental, dental hygiene, or dental assisting school are excused from general CE for that biennium, subject to the statutory-topic carve-out in Rule 64B5-12.0135(4).

FAQ
Does Florida treat DDS and DMD differently for CE purposes?
No. The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degrees are equivalent in Florida, and the Florida Board of Dentistry licenses both under Florida Statutes Chapter 466. The same 30-hour biennial CE obligation, medical-errors course, controlled-substance course, domestic-violence mandate, first-renewal HIV/AIDS course, and CPR certification rule apply to every Florida dentist regardless of degree title.
Are ADA CERP credits accepted in Florida?
Yes. Rule 64B5-12.013(6)(b) recognizes courses from the American or National Dental Associations and provider organizations recognized by either association, and it also recognizes the Academy of General Dentistry and providers approved through AGD's national sponsor approval pathway.
Are there mandatory CE topics for dentist renewal in Florida?
Yes. Every Florida dentist must complete 2 hours of prevention of medical errors CE and 2 hours of controlled substance prescribing CE per biennium, both counted within the 30-hour total. Domestic violence CE is 2 hours every third biennium, and HIV/AIDS CE is 2 hours no later than first renewal or for reactivation. Current CPR certification is required in addition to the 30-hour CE total and cannot be online-only. Sedation permit holders complete a 4-hour board-approved Medical Emergencies course each biennium.
Where can I check my Florida dental license renewal date?
The Florida Department of Health maintains license verification at mqa-internet.doh.state.fl.us. Florida dental license renewal is tied to license expiration on a biennial cycle.
