Mandatory topics

For NPs, 40 hours is the total CME requirement. Mississippi also requires a set of one-time topics that count toward the 40-hour total.

At least 10 contact hours must be directly related to controlled substances per renewed licensure period. Carryover hours may NOT be used to satisfy this requirement.

Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Mississippi Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Documentation & audit

Mississippi uses CE Broker for CE tracking. Records should be retained for 4 years. Board conducts periodic audits with a 10-business-day response window.

Waivers & exemptions

New graduate APRNs initially licensed by examination are exempt for the initial licensure period

FAQ
How many controlled substance CE hours are required for Mississippi APRNs?
Under 30 Miss. Admin. Code Part 2815, Rule 1.6(B)(3), at least 10 contact hours must be directly related to controlled substances per renewed licensure period. Important note: the MSBN's APRN web page states 5 contact hours per "State Certification Period" — a figure that conflicts with the admin code's 10-hour requirement. Because the administrative code is the primary regulatory authority, this file uses the 10-hour figure. However, because this conflict is unresolved, NPs should verify the current requirement directly with the MSBN before their renewal cycle begins. Additionally, carryover hours from the prior period cannot be used to satisfy the controlled substances requirement regardless of which figure ultimately governs.
Do Mississippi NPs have to complete both RN and APRN CE requirements?
This is an open question under Mississippi's current regulatory text. Part 2815 establishes separate CE requirements for RN licensure (Rule 1.5, 20 hours) and APRN licensure (Rule 1.6, 40 hours) without explicitly stating whether the APRN requirement subsumes or stacks on top of the RN requirement for nurses holding both licenses. NPs who hold active Mississippi RN and APRN licenses should confirm with the MSBN whether satisfying the 40-hour APRN requirement also satisfies the 20-hour RN requirement, or whether both must be separately documented. Until the MSBN provides written clarification, the conservative approach is to ensure CE documentation covers both obligations.
Is Mississippi in the NLC nursing compact?
Yes, Mississippi is a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC), which governs the RN license layer that NPs hold alongside their APRN license. The NLC allows nurses with Mississippi as their home state to hold a multistate RN license that permits practice in all NLC member states. Mississippi is not a member of the APRN Compact — the separate compact for advanced practice registered nurses. As a result, an NP who practices in multiple states must hold a separate APRN license in each state where they practice at the advanced practice level, even if their RN license is covered by the NLC multistate license. CE requirements for the RN layer are determined by the nurse's home state under the NLC; Mississippi's 40-hour APRN CE requirement applies to all Mississippi APRN licensees regardless of compact status.
