FAQ
When does the Mississippi RN CE renewal period run?
Mississippi RN CE runs on a fixed two-year cycle that begins on January 1 of each odd-numbered year and expires on December 31 of the following even-numbered year, per 30 Miss. Admin. Code Part 2815, Rule 1.5(A). For example, the 2025–2026 renewal period runs from January 1, 2025 through December 31, 2026. License renewal itself occurs during the fall of each even-numbered year, with the renewal window opening September 1. All 20 CE contact hours must be earned within the applicable renewed licensure period, except for any carryover hours from the prior period.
What counts as accepted CE for Mississippi RN renewal?
Mississippi accepts CE from two types of providers under Rule 1.3(C): accredited nursing or healthcare educational institutions, and nationally accredited providers of nursing or healthcare CE. Programs accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) qualify. Delivery format is flexible — classroom, online, professional journals, correspondence, and independent study all qualify. Academic credit may be converted at 15 contact hours per semester credit or 10 contact hours per quarter credit for nursing- or healthcare-related coursework. Content must be related to nursing and/or healthcare broadly; Rule 1.3(E) identifies recommended topics but none are mandatory for RNs.
Is Mississippi part of the NLC nursing compact?
Yes, Mississippi is a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC). Mississippi-licensed nurses who designate Mississippi as their home state may hold a multistate license that permits practice in all other NLC member states without obtaining additional state licenses. CE requirements for renewal are governed by the home state — so Mississippi-licensed nurses must meet Mississippi's 20-hour biennial CE requirement at renewal, while nurses practicing in Mississippi under a multistate license from another compact state follow their own home state's CE rules.
