Mandatory topics

For NPs, 45 hours is the total CME requirement. Nevada also requires a set of one-time topics that count toward the 45-hour total.

Cultural competency[1]
4 hrs
Biennial
4 hours cultural competency/diversity, equity and inclusion per renewal cycle (effective 2024, per AB 267). Part of the mandatory 30 RN hours. Counts toward the 30-hour RN CE total, not the 15 additional APRN hours.

Beginning in 2024, nurses must complete 4 hours of cultural competency instead of 2 hours each renewal cycle. This requirement is part of the mandatory 30 hours already mandated by law.

Conditional requirements

These rules apply only when the trigger described under each card is met (for example, holding a state-issued controlled substance registration or treating a specific patient population). Each cites the underlying statute or rule directly.

APRNs registered to dispense controlled substances

Advanced practice registered nurses registered to dispense controlled substances must complete at least 2 hours of training relating specifically to persons with substance use or other addictive disorders and the prescribing of opioids during each period of licensure.
Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Nevada Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

FAQ
Does Nevada require pharmacology or opioid CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
Nevada requires NPs registered to dispense controlled substances to complete at least 2 hours per licensure period of CE on substance use disorders and opioid prescribing under NRS 632.2375. There is no separate general pharmacology CE requirement beyond this. Nevada also requires 2 hours of suicide prevention CE every 4 years for all APRNs (every other biennial renewal cycle). These requirements are additive to the 45-hour combined CE total.
Is Nevada in the APRN Compact?
Nevada is a member of the base NLC (Nursing Licensure Compact), which governs the underlying RN license. Nevada's APRN Compact membership status was not confirmed from the Layer 1 scrape. NPs who practice in multiple states should contact the Nevada State Board of Nursing to confirm whether Nevada participates in the APRN Compact.
Does Nevada require suicide prevention CE for NPs?
Yes. NRS 632.343 requires Nevada APRNs (and CRNAs) to complete 2 hours of evidence-based suicide prevention CE every 4 years — meaning every other biennial renewal cycle. This is an APRN-specific requirement that does not apply to the general RN population. NPs should track which renewal cycles this falls on to ensure compliance.
Where can I check my Nevada NP/APRN license renewal date?
Nevada NPs can verify their license status at https://nvbn.boardsofnursing.org/licenselookup. Renewal is completed through the Nevada Nurse Portal at https://nvbn.boardsofnursing.org/nvbn/. The Nevada State Board of Nursing can be reached at (888) 590-6726 or nursingboard@nsbn.state.nv.us for questions about APRN CE requirements.
