One-time lifetime 4-hour bioterrorism/terrorism-related instruction, required of all Nevada nursing licensees including APRNs (NRS 632.343(3)(b): 'For each person licensed pursuant to this chapter'). Must be completed within 2 years after initial licensure. Not recurring per renewal cycle. Records must be retained indefinitely. Same requirement as the RN layer.

Opioid/Substance Use[2]

All Nevada APRNs complete 2 hours of Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) training once, within 2 years after initial licensure. This is separate from the recurring opioid/SUD training for APRNs with controlled-substance authority, although a qualifying course may address both subjects.

FAQ
Do Nevada NPs need separate CE from RNs?
Yes. Nevada APRNs must complete 45 contact hours per biennial renewal cycle — 30 hours (the same as all RN licensees) plus 15 additional hours related to their APRN practice area. Nevada's codified rule (NAC 632.291) specifies that the 45-hour APRN total may include the 30-hour RN CE requirement. The 15 additional APRN hours must be specifically related to the NP's area of practice.
Does Nevada require pharmacology or opioid CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
Nevada requires NPs with controlled-substance prescribing or dispensing authority to complete at least 2 hours per licensure period of CE on substance use disorders and opioid prescribing under NRS 632.2375 and NAC 632.291. There is no separate general pharmacology CE requirement beyond this. All APRNs also complete a one-time 2-hour SBIRT course within 2 years after initial licensure and 2 hours of suicide-prevention CE every 4 years. These topic requirements are tracked separately from the 45-hour combined CE total.
Is Nevada in the APRN Compact?
No. Nevada is not a member of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) — which governs the underlying RN license — and has not enacted the APRN Compact either. Both credentials are single-state. The Nevada State Board of Nursing has repeatedly sought legislation to join the NLC (most recently Assembly Bill 108 in the 2023 Legislative Session) without success to date. Nevada NPs who wish to practice in other states must obtain individual licensure in those states, and out-of-state NPs must obtain a Nevada license before practicing in Nevada.
Does Nevada require suicide prevention CE for NPs?
Yes. NRS 632.343 requires Nevada APRNs (and CRNAs) to complete 2 hours of evidence-based suicide prevention CE every 4 years — meaning every other biennial renewal cycle. This is an APRN-specific requirement that does not apply to the general RN population. NPs should track which renewal cycles this falls on to ensure compliance.
