FAQ
Does New Mexico require pharmacology CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
New Mexico does not impose a general recurring pharmacology CE requirement for all NPs with prescriptive authority. The DEA-related CE obligation for CNPs is 5 hours in non-cancer pain management (not pharmacology broadly), covering pain management rules, controlled substance pharmacology, abuse/diversion awareness, and prescribing regulations. CNPs without current national certification who follow the alternative CE pathway must complete 10 pharmacology CE hours, but this is a consequence of not having certification rather than a prescriptive authority CE mandate.
Is New Mexico in the APRN Compact?
New Mexico is a member of the base NLC (Nursing Licensure Compact), which governs the underlying RN license. New Mexico's APRN Compact membership status was not confirmed during the Layer 1 data scrape. NPs who practice in multiple states should contact the New Mexico Board of Nursing to confirm whether NM participates in the APRN Compact.
Does New Mexico require NPs to maintain national certification for CNP renewal?
Yes. Under 16.12.2.12 NMAC, CNPs are expected to hold current national APRN certification as the basis for their renewal CE compliance. The rule provides that "verification of certification or recertification within the current renewal period is accepted in lieu of the 30 hours of continuing education required for licensure." While there is technically an alternative CE pathway for CNPs without certification, national certification is the standard requirement and the most efficient renewal route.
Where can I renew my New Mexico NP/APRN license?
New Mexico NPs renew through the Board's online portal at https://www.bon.nm.gov/, which activates 60 days before license expiration. All CE must be uploaded to CE Broker at https://www.bon.nm.gov/ceu/ before submitting the renewal application. The Board sends automatic email reminders at 60 and 30 days before expiration. For questions, contact the New Mexico Board of Nursing through the website.
