Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

Full-time CODA-accredited postgraduate residency or specialty training enrollment exempts the dentist from the 20-hour requirement upon submission of program documentation.

Alabama-licensed dentists practicing outside Alabama are excused from annual CE while away. Returning practitioners must show CE for years practiced out-of-state, up to 5 years.

Board-granted hardship waiver/extension on written request received by September 1 of the annual cycle.

FAQ
Does Alabama treat DDS and DMD differently for CE purposes?
No. The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degrees are equivalent, and the Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama licenses both under identical rules. Every general dentist, regardless of degree title, must complete the same 20 annual hours of CE, the same mandatory topics, and the same sedation-permit-specific add-ons.
Are ADA CERP credits accepted in Alabama?
Yes. While Rule 270-X-4-.04 does not name ADA CERP or AGD PACE explicitly, paragraph (6)(c) recognizes "training provided by national, state, district, or local dental or dental hygiene associations," which encompasses essentially all ADA CERP-recognized providers and AGD PACE-approved providers. Training from CODA-accredited dental schools is also recognized blanketly. Other courses can be submitted to the Board for pre-approval with at least 30 days' lead time.
Are there mandatory CE topics for dentist renewal in Alabama?
Yes. Every Alabama dentist must complete annually: 1 hour of infectious disease control, 1 hour of controlled substance prescribing, 1 hour of ethical considerations (which can include abuse/neglect/human trafficking, boundary violations, informed consent, billing and coding, or mandatory reporting), and current Basic Life Support certification (2-4 hours, live). Sedation permit holders add 2 hours of sedation training and current ACLS (or PALS for pediatric specialists).
Where can I check my Alabama dental license renewal date?
The Board of Dental Examiners of Alabama maintains license verification at dentalboard.org. CE Broker also displays renewal information for any Alabama dentist registered in the system. The annual renewal window aligns with the October 1 – September 30 CE cycle.
