FAQ
Does Alaska treat DDS and DMD differently for CE purposes?
No. The Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) and Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degrees are equivalent. The Alaska Board of Dental Examiners licenses both under AS 08.36 and applies the same 32-hour biennial CE obligation to every dentist regardless of degree title.
Are ADA CERP credits accepted in Alaska?
Yes. Under 12 AAC 28.410, the Alaska Board of Dental Examiners recognizes courses sponsored by the ADA, AGD, ADHA, accredited dental schools, government agencies, and providers approved through ADA CERP and AGD PACE. For courses outside those categories, the licensee can request board approval, but most mainstream CE qualifies without separate pre-approval.
Are there mandatory CE topics for dentist renewal in Alaska?
The mandatory topics are limited for general dentists. Every dentist must hold current CPR certification at renewal. DEA-registered dentists must additionally complete at least 2 hours of CE in pain management and opioid use and addiction every biennium. There is no infection-control or abuse-reporting CE mandate for general dentists under 12 AAC 28.400. Sedation permit holders face separate CE and ACLS/PALS certification requirements under 12 AAC 28.010 and 12 AAC 28.015.
Where can I check my Alaska dental license renewal date?
The Alaska Department of Commerce, Division of Corporations, Business and Professional Licensing maintains a license verification search. Alaska dental licenses expire on February 28 of every even-numbered year, and the CE total of 32 hours must be earned during the concluding licensing period.
