How many CE hours do Alaska registered nurses need?
Alaska uses a two-of-three continuing competency model rather than a flat CE total. Per 12 AAC 44.600, before each biennial renewal a nurse must document two of three methods: 30 contact hours of continuing education (12 AAC 44.610), 30 hours of uncompensated professional activities (12 AAC 44.620), or 320 hours of nursing employment (12 AAC 44.630). If the CE pathway is chosen, 30 contact hours are required. There is no suicide prevention CE mandate for Alaska RNs. Nurses with a federal DEA registration must additionally complete 2 hours of pain management and opioid use/addiction education per AS 08.68.276. Is Alaska a Nurse Licensure Compact state?
