Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

First-renewal exemption — those persons licensed for the first time shall not be required to complete CE as a prerequisite for the first renewal of their licenses. CE hours acquired anytime from initial licensing until the second license renewal may be used.

FAQ
How many CE hours do Iowa podiatrists need?
Forty (40) hours per biennium. The CE compliance period runs July 1 of even-numbered years through June 30 of the next even-numbered year. The first renewal after initial licensure is exempt from CE.
Are APMA-approved credits accepted in Iowa?
Yes — CPME-approved (and therefore APMA-approved) CME is the primary recognized credit type. The board does not publish a closed sponsor list at the level of granularity that Indiana or Georgia do; the standard is "approved" CE consistent with national podiatric medicine accreditation.
Are there mandatory CE topics for DPM renewal in Iowa?
Two conditional mandates: 1 hour of conscious-sedation CE if the DPM utilizes conscious sedation in practice; 1 hour of CDC opioid-guideline CE if the DPM has prescribed opioids during the biennium. Both count within the 40-hour total. There are no other state-imposed mandatory topics. The federal MATE Act adds a one-time 8-hour SUD training for DEA registrants.
Where can I check my Iowa podiatry license renewal date?
DIAL operates a license verification search at amanda-portal.idph.state.ia.us/dialhpl/portal/PublicSearch.jsp, which displays current status, expiration date, and disciplinary history. The DIAL podiatry licensing page at dial.iowa.gov/licenses/health-professions/podiatry links to renewal information.
