FAQ
Does Michigan require NPs to maintain national certification for APRN renewal?
Yes. Under Mich. Admin. Code R 338.10405b, NPs must obtain recertification or maintain certification within 2 years from recognized certifying organizations, including ANCC, the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board, the National Certification Corporation, the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and others. Certification renewal must align with the biennial RN license renewal schedule. Holding current specialty certification may also satisfy the full 25-hour CE requirement.
Does Michigan require pharmacology CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
Michigan does not have a documented recurring pharmacology CE requirement for NPs with prescriptive authority at the biennial renewal level (beyond what may be encompassed in the unresolved APRN category-specific hours gap). NPs seeking a controlled substance license must complete a one-time opioids and controlled substances awareness training, but this is not a recurring biennial obligation. NPs should confirm current LARA requirements directly at michigan.gov/bplrules.
Is Michigan in the APRN Compact?
No. Michigan is not a member of the APRN Compact as of 2026, and Michigan is also not a member of the base NLC (Nursing Licensure Compact). All nurses practicing in Michigan — including NPs — must hold Michigan-issued licenses. NPs who practice in Michigan must renew both their Michigan RN license and their Michigan NP specialty certification with the Michigan Board of Nursing.
Where can I check my Michigan NP/APRN license renewal date?
Michigan NP licensees can verify their RN license and NP specialty certification status through the LARA online license lookup tool at https://aca.michigan.gov/ia_licensee_srch/. For APRN-specific renewal requirements and administrative rule access, LARA maintains current rules at www.michigan.gov/bplrules. The Michigan Board of Nursing can be reached at (517) 241-0199 for renewal inquiries.
