FAQ
Does Minnesota require pharmacology CE for NPs with prescriptive authority?
Minnesota does not impose a general pharmacology CE requirement for all NPs with prescriptive authority. However, APRNs with DEA registration who are authorized to prescribe controlled substances must complete 2 CE hours per renewal on best practices in prescribing opioids and controlled substances, plus non-pharmacological alternatives for pain treatment, under Minn. Stat. § 214.12, subd. 6. NPs without DEA registration are exempt from this requirement.
Is Minnesota in the APRN Compact?
No. Minnesota is not a member of the APRN Compact as of 2026, and Minnesota is also not a member of the base NLC (Nursing Licensure Compact). All NPs and APRNs practicing in Minnesota must hold Minnesota-issued licenses. NPs who wish to practice in multiple states must hold individual state licenses or certifications in each state where they practice.
Does Minnesota require NPs to maintain national certification for APRN licensure renewal?
Yes. Under Minn. Stat. § 148.231(c), applicants for APRN renewal must provide evidence of current certification or recertification in the appropriate APRN role in at least one population focus by a nationally accredited certifying body recognized by the Board. The Board must receive verification of certification status directly from the certifying body at each renewal. NPs should initiate this verification process before their renewal deadline.
Where can I check my Minnesota NP/APRN license renewal date?
Minnesota NPs can check their APRN and RN license status and renewal information through the Minnesota Board of Nursing website at https://mn.gov/boards/nursing/. APRN-specific renewal guidance, including the required certification bodies and renewal application instructions, is available at https://mn.gov/boards/nursing/advanced-practice/. NPs can contact the Board of Nursing directly through the contact information listed on the website for questions about certification verification or renewal procedures.
