Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, West Virginia Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

An APRN (including a CRNA) who was licensed within the past year and did not prescribe, administer, or dispense controlled substances may request a CE waiver of the 3-hour best-prescribing/drug-diversion training by submitting a signed, dated exemption statement uploaded to CE Broker. This waiver applies only to the drug-diversion training conditional; the 12 pharmacotherapeutics and 12 clinical-management hours are still required.

FAQ
How many state-level CE hours do West Virginia CRNAs need?
24 contact hours per biennial renewal for the APRN credential under W. Va. Code R. § 19-7-6.1.b: 12 hours in pharmacotherapeutics plus 12 hours in clinical management of patients. The 12 clinical-management hours may simultaneously count toward the underlying RN CE. CRNAs holding Limited Prescriptive Authority may use 8 of the 12 pharmacotherapeutics hours for renewal/reinstatement of that authority. CE is tracked through CE Broker.
Does West Virginia require NBCRNA certification for CRNA licensure?
Yes. WV APRN-CRNA licensure requires current NBCRNA national certification, both at initial application and on a continuing basis.
Is West Virginia part of the APRN Compact?
No, WV has not enacted the APRN Compact as of April 2026. WV is, however, a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for the underlying RN license.
