Biennial

Louisiana APRNs WITH Controlled Substance Authority (prescriptive authority) must complete 6 contact hours of pharmacotherapeutics CE annually = 12 hours per biennium. Most CRNAs do not separately hold CSA but those who do (e.g., for pain practice) are subject.

Accepted credit

Credit must come from an organization accredited by the ACCME, AMA, Louisiana Medical Association, or AAFP. ACGME residency or fellowship time accrues toward the requirement. Teaching or presenting accredited CME can satisfy a portion of required hours.

Credit systemNotes
NBCRNA Class A
NBCRNA Class A / MAC Ed credits qualify toward the underlying RN CE.
ANCC Contact Hour
ANCC contact hours from accredited providers qualify.
Documentation & audit

Physicians are responsible for retaining CME documentation and producing it on request. Requirements include course title, dates, hours, sponsoring organization, and accrediting body.

Waivers & exemptions

A CRNA who meets the underlying Louisiana RN-license relicensure requirement via 900 practice hours during the 2-year period (verified by the employer) does not need to complete the 30 CE contact hours.

An APRN (including a CRNA) who is nationally board certified meets the Louisiana RN-license renewal CE provisions by holding an approved national certification (NBCRNA for CRNAs).

FAQ
How many state-level CE hours do Louisiana CRNAs need?
Louisiana uses an option-based RN/APRN rule under LAC tit. 46 § XLVII-3333: 30 board-approved contact hours of CE OR 900 practice hours per 2-year cycle. Most working CRNAs satisfy this via the practice-hours path. APRN renewal additionally requires active NBCRNA certification, and CRNAs who hold separate Louisiana Controlled Substance Authority must complete 12 pharmacotherapeutics hours per biennium (6 annually).
Does Louisiana require NBCRNA certification for CRNA licensure?
Yes. NBCRNA initial certification is required for APRN/CRNA licensure, and active NBCRNA certification must be maintained for renewal.
Is Louisiana part of the APRN Compact?
No. Louisiana has not enacted the APRN Compact as of 2026. Louisiana is a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) for the RN portion.
Where can I check my Louisiana CRNA license renewal date?
License status and verification are available through the LSBN verification page at lsbn.state.la.us/Verification.aspx.
